Those who like their beer low in alcohol have plenty to get excited about this week, with the trial of a selection of 2.8% ales on trial in Punch Taverns pubs across the country.

The 2.8% ales – which qualify for a 50% reduction in beer duty – are being trialled in a selection of pubs across the country. The pubs will be stocking 3 varieties of ale at 2.8% or lower from the Green King, Caledonian and Adnams breweries and taking on board customer feedback to determine the success of the scheme. If the new ales prove popular, we could see an influx of ales at 2.8% ABV or lower flooding the market. Aside from the lower beer duty, lower alcohol beers appeal to a variety of people including drivers wanting a single pint, diners looking for something to complement their meal and anyone who wants to enjoy a responsible drink. With plenty of press coverage focusing on the dangers of binge drinking and overdoing the alcohol, it is refreshing to see a development in the opposite direction.

Both JD Wetherspoons and Whitbread – the company that operates chains like Beefeater and Brewers Fayre – have been nominated among the best companies to work for in the UK by an independent survey.

Compiled by the CRF Institute – an independent researching body – the annual Britain’s Top Employer list takes into consideration many different factors including pay, extra benefits, training, career development opportunities and employee well-being. Each year, many recognisable names from the hospitality industry take prominent place in the list, providing a welcome boost for many pubs and their staff. For Wetherspoons, it is the ninth time they have appeared on the list. Cited as providing excellent working conditions for staff across their 800+ pubs, researchers were impressed by the training opportunities offered to workers as well as the bonuses and share options available and the generous employee discount scheme. Whitbread came third overall in the list, earning praise for their high rates of pay and excellent career development opportunities, establishing themselves firmly as one of the country’s top employers.
